Super Mario Bros. Gender Reveal Cookies

Remember me mentioning my tiny addiction to Facebook? Admittedly, it has gotten worse. I now kind of dread plane rides and camping– activities I used to really look forward to– because I’m irritable without a phone signal and/or internet connection. I can’t seem to unplug. But really, how can you not love Facebook? It’s the best way of keeping track of what all your friends are up to. Coincidentally, Facebook is one of the reasons for my latest cookie idea.

I’ve noticed a major trend in my friends’ statuses lately; it’s all over my news feed. It seems everyone I grew up with is posting about having babies. I guess I’m at that age when everyone’s popping out the next generation. It’s funny because I still remember the days of heading to the homes of these friends to play original NES video games for hours on end.

One blogger friend of mine, Jennifer of Not Your Momma’s Cookie, announced recently she, too, was having a baby. However, it wasn’t until after Jennifer posted a Guess the Gender Sweepstakes on her blog when my cookie idea came to fruition. My plan was to make a fun cookie design these 80’s kids would really appreciate– a Super Mario Bros. gender reveal cookie!

The magic reveal behind these cookies comes in two parts: the 1-Up mushroom cookie and the question mark box to house it. Let me first start with how to make the cookie.

I wanted to preserve the 8-bit, retro look of the video game, so I made a template of the blocky mushroom design. You can download and print the PDF template of this cookie design HERE.

Because of the intricate lines of this design, it was just easier to use my Kopykake projector. Clip the paper template in the upper compartment and project the design onto a cookie below.

Note:

If you don’t have a Kopykake projector, no worries. There are other ways this cookie can be done. Janine from Sugarkissed did an awesome tutorial on 8-bit Minecraft cookies using a drawn grid method. That method came be applied to the mushroom template I provided.

Icing method

  1. 1

    Spread thinned-down flood icing

With the template image projected on the cookie, spread thinned-down, white flood icing over the face section with an offset spatula. (You could outline and flood this area, but I think the flat, face surface adds more dimension to the cookie.)

  2. 2

Outline and flood the background color

For the rest of the colors I used piping consistency icing to outline the areas and flood consistency to fill in the middle. Outline and flood the background color of the mushroom area. Use a toothpick or boo-boo stick to guide the icing into the corners. Let this set for about 15 minutes.

  3. 3

Outline and flood the border color

Repeat the same outline-and-flood process with the border areas. Again, let this set for about 15 minutes.

    Finish the white areas

Lastly, outline and flood the remaining white spot areas.

Ta-Dah! Here are what the finished cookies should look like.

Creating the box

Now, on to the second part of this project: the box.

You might remember these boxes from the favorite products I listed in my recent BRP Box Shop blog post. You can find these single cookie boxes on BRP’s website.

I decorated the exterior of the box with a card stock wrapper I made to resemble the question mark boxes and bricks from the video game. You can download and print the PDF template of this wrapper HERE.

After cutting out the graphics from the sheet of card stock, I glued the brick paper strap around the back, then glued the question mark block over the window cutout. (BRP Box Shop does offer a box without a window, which would have been more ideal. These window boxes were just what I had available.)

While the glue is setting, I sealed each cookie in a clear cellophane bag for easy handling. When all is said and done, place the cookie in the box and you got yourself an 80’s-themed, gender reveal cookie party favor!

“It’s a boy!”

“It’s a girl!”

“We’re having twins!”

(FYI: if need be, these boxes have room to hold two cookies comfortably.)

You get the idea. Congrats to all the new moms and dads to be! I wish you all the best with your upcoming bundle of joy.

Oh, and if you’re curious, head over to Jennifer’s blog to find out what tiny one her and her hubby are having. Then stick around and explore all the fun treats she shares. You won’t regret it!
